Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice Commander Deck Guide: Aura Upgrades and Budget Swaps

Build a Light-Paws Commander deck with Aura upgrade packages, budget swaps, exact tutor lines, protection rules, lethal math, and a practical recovery plan.

In this guide

Quick answer

Build an Aura toolbox with a clear route to lethal damage

Light-Paws upgrades should give cheap cast Auras several useful search targets: protection, evasion, damage, and recovery. Prioritize Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Hyena Umbra, and flash interaction before expensive Equipment. Know the restrictions: searched Auras must fit the mana-value limit and attach to Light-Paws, and they do not trigger another search because you did not cast them.

Starting deck targets, not fixed rules

Lands 34 to 36
Aura cards 28 to 34
Flash Auras within that count 6 to 9
Draw and selection 8 to 10
Interaction outside Auras 6 to 9

What the commander actually turns each Aura into

Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice rewards an Aura entering under your control if you cast it. The search finds an Aura with equal or lower mana value and a different name from every Aura you control, then puts it onto the battlefield attached to Light-Paws. A cheap Aura therefore becomes a small toolbox decision. It does not become permission to search for any enchantment, and the found Aura does not start an endless search chain.

This guide builds a mono-white multiplayer Commander deck around protected combat damage. Do not import a Duel Commander or Arena Brawl list without checking its rules and card legality. Here you normally need to defeat three opponents, and one player eliminated by commander damage does not stop the others from taking their turns. Cheap Auras can be powerful enough that the deck's dollar cost tells opponents very little about its speed.

The most useful upgrade is often understanding what each search must solve. Is the next obstacle a blocker, targeted removal, a destruction sweeper, or simply insufficient power? Fetching more damage into open removal wastes a good toolbox. Fetching a third defensive effect while an opponent is about to combo wastes a chance to close the game. Decide which event you are trying to survive or produce before picking up the library.

Scaling damage

Counts all enchantments you control, including itself. First strike is useful, but it does not make a blocked creature connect.

Combat access

Protection from creatures prevents ordinary creature blocks. It does not protect attached Auras from removal.

Removal plus pressure

A two-mana Aura that adds ward and lifelink while its entry exiles an opposing nonland permanent. That permanent returns when the Aura leaves.

One-mana cast Auras can find one-mana tools such as Ethereal Armor, Hyena Umbra, Sentinel's Eyes, or Shardmage's Rescue. Two-mana Auras also unlock All That Glitters, Spirit Mantle, and Benevolent Blessing. A three-mana cast Aura can reach Battle Mastery or Unquestioned Authority. The relevant number is mana value, not the amount you actually paid after a discount. This is why a deck full of one-mana starters still needs ways to reach its larger finishers.

The cast Aura does not have to enchant Light-Paws. Casting Darksteel Mutation on an opposing creature can trigger her search after the Aura resolves and enters under your control. The searched Aura, however, must legally attach to Light-Paws. You cannot find a removal Aura and choose a different opposing creature as its destination. Some Auras could legally attach to her but would harm your own plan, so legal does not always mean useful.

Sram, Senior Edificer and Kor Spiritdancer refill your hand from casting Auras. They do not draw an extra card for the searched Aura entering without being cast. Keeping that distinction straight makes your draw count honest. Eight draw effects that mostly require casts are not eight independent ways to recover from an empty hand. Include some reliable card access outside the central enchantment sequence if your games regularly go through two wipes.

Mulligan for a protected start, not just two lands

A useful opener is three Plains, Sram, Flickering Ward, Benevolent Blessing, and Spirit Mantle. Against an interactive table, turn two can be Sram rather than an exposed commander. On turn three, three Plains cast Light-Paws for two and Flickering Ward for one. Sram draws from the Aura cast. If Ward resolves, choose a relevant color and search for a one-mana protection piece such as Hyena Umbra from your library. This line uses exactly three mana and leaves you with development rather than an unsupported threat.

That sequence is hypothetical, not a guarantee that the table lets each spell resolve. If opponents visibly hold a removal spell and can answer the commander before Ward resolves, waiting for a fourth mana or a different protection window may be better. Conversely, in a pod that is racing and offers a safe turn-two window, playing Light-Paws first can be justified. The correct opening depends on available interaction, not a rule that the commander must always appear on turn two.

Ship a hand with two Plains, three expensive Equipment, Mantle of the Ancients, and no cast Aura below three mana. It has lands but no coherent early engine. At six, bottom the redundant high-cost damage or recursion card before your third land if that land enables commander plus protection. A one-land hand with several one-mana Auras is still a one-land hand. Search triggers do not find Plains. The mana-base guide helps evaluate source access without confusing a low curve with automatic land drops.

Respond to removal with the right kind of protection

A flash Aura can be a response and a search trigger, but the timing has two vulnerable points. An opponent can remove Light-Paws before the flash Aura resolves, or after that Aura enters while her search trigger waits on the stack. A protection Aura that already answers the spell is safer than a decorative flash Aura that relies entirely on the search. Have the target and the search choice ready before announcing the response.

Shardmage's Rescue is a particularly clear example: it gives the enchanted creature hexproof only while that Aura entered this turn. Casting it in response to a targeted opposing removal spell can make that target illegal, and its entry can find a one-mana Aura. Finding Rescue from another qualifying Aura can also grant temporary hexproof because it still entered this turn. It is not permanent hexproof. Mark the turn instead of leaving opponents to discover the expired protection later.

Hyena Umbra handles destruction, including lethal damage, but not exile or sacrifice. Indestructible from Timely Ward also does not prevent exile or enough toughness reduction. A sacrifice effect that makes you choose a creature is different from a targeted removal spell. Cartouche of Solidarity can provide an expendable token if you can get it into play before a normal single-creature sacrifice effect resolves. That helps against one such demand; it is not an answer to every sacrifice engine or a spell that specifies the commander.

Choose protection for the actual threat

ThreatUseful response or preparationLimitation
Targeted opposing removal Shardmage's Rescue or appropriate color protection Rescue hexproof lasts only for its entry turn; color protection must match the source.
Ordinary destruction sweeper Hyena Umbra or Timely Ward Does not cover exile, sacrifice, or toughness reduction.
Creature blockers Spirit Mantle or Unquestioned Authority Creature protection does not make your Auras untargetable.
A single sacrifice demand An extra creature, possibly from Cartouche of Solidarity Check the exact wording; the token must exist before the sacrifice is chosen.
Enchantment exile or a repeated edict engine A relevant answer, phasing plan, or a faster clock Stacking another ordinary protective Aura may do nothing.

Avoid the protection-from-white trap

Protection normally prevents Auras with the protected quality from staying attached. Choosing white with Flickering Ward preserves Ward itself because its text says so, but other white Auras can fall off. Cho-Manno's Blessing has the same narrow self-preservation clause. Benevolent Blessing is different: its exception preserves Auras and Equipment you control that are already attached when the protection applies. Read those sentences literally rather than assuming all three cards work alike.

Even Benevolent Blessing choosing white blocks future white Auras from legally enchanting Light-Paws. It preserves the existing setup; it does not grant blanket permission to add new attachments. Putting an Aura directly onto the battlefield avoids targeting, but does not avoid protection's enchant restriction. This matters for the commander's search as much as for spells in hand. Her official ruling says an Aura that cannot legally attach stays in the library.

Commander damage requires twenty-one combat damage from the same commander over the game. With Light-Paws and exactly Ethereal Armor, All That Glitters, Hyena Umbra, and Battle Mastery attached, and no other artifacts or enchantments, she is eleven power: base two, four from Armor, four from Glitters, and one from Umbra. Double strike can deal twenty-two commander damage if both combat-damage steps connect. That is a specific lethal setup rather than a vague instruction to make her big.

The setup still needs an attack route. First strike and double strike do not let a blocked creature damage the player without trample or another relevant effect. Adding Spirit Mantle as a fifth enchantment makes each scaling Aura count five, adds another point of power from Mantle, and usually removes creature blocking as an obstacle. In this example the total becomes fourteen power, or twenty-eight damage across both steps if unprevented. Recalculate after removal: destroying one scaling Aura can remove far more than one point.

When deciding whom to attack, consider who can end the game or dismantle your setup before your next combat. Spreading seven commander damage across three opponents can be worse than advancing one player toward twenty-one, but eliminating the weakest player while leaving an imminent combo untouched is not progress toward winning the table. Track each player's commander damage with the Commander tracker. Life gain does not undo commander damage already taken, and regular damage from another creature does not add to Light-Paws' total.

Use budget upgrades that preserve the search tree

Conditional Light-Paws upgrade packages

If present, consider cuttingAdd or comparePurpose and cost of the change
A six-mana Aura that only adds power Ethereal Armor plus a cheap flash Aura in another flex slot Makes development cheaper and responses available. Two slots replace one large effect.
A second expensive Equipment package All That Glitters and Spirit Mantle Supports commander searches directly. Loses Equipment staying on the battlefield after creature removal.
A slow source of repeated small draw Sram or Kor Spiritdancer Rewards normal Aura casts earlier. Both remain vulnerable creatures.
A redundant pump Aura Sheltered by Ghosts Adds removal, lifelink, and ward. The exiled permanent returns if the Aura leaves.
Replenish when its chosen printing exceeds the allowance Retether Recovers creature-enchanting Auras for four mana, not every enchantment. Does not create new Light-Paws searches.
An unsupported expensive protection card Hyena Umbra plus an appropriate flash response Covers common destruction and targeting patterns efficiently. Does not cover every sweeper.

These are cuts only if the named card or role is in your list. Preserve the mana-value lanes when changing packages. Removing every three-mana cast Aura while keeping Battle Mastery as your planned search target makes that finish harder to access. Sigarda's Aid can let you cast Auras as though they have flash, but it is not an Aura and cannot be found by Light-Paws. It also occupies an opening-turn slot that might otherwise develop a draw engine or interaction.

Price the whole revision before buying a premium recovery spell or fast-mana package. A basic-heavy mono-white mana base can support the core plan without expensive dual lands. The budget alternatives guide explains how to compare roles; the budget alternatives tool helps explore candidates. Verify printing-specific prices and regional costs. A cheap list with repeated protection and fast commander kills can still be a poor fit for slower precon games. Explain that behavior during the pregame conversation instead of treating a modest budget as a power-level promise.

Rebuild correctly after the first wipe

Retether and Replenish can return Auras without casting them. Those entries do not satisfy Light-Paws' "if you cast it" condition, so they do not produce a new search for each returning Aura. That mistaken claim appears in community discussion and can dramatically overstate the recovery. A returned Aura can still have its own entry trigger. Mantle of the Ancients is different again: casting Mantle can trigger Light-Paws, while the cards Mantle returns were not individually cast. Compare destruction and exile patterns in the Commander board-wipe guide before choosing a recovery package.

After a wipe, check whether you can establish a creature before the recursion spell and whether the recovered Auras can legally attach. Retether does not conjure a creature out of an empty battlefield. If commander tax leaves you short, a surviving Sram or another suitable creature can carry Auras while you draw toward a better turn. Hold one cheap cast Aura when the current stack already threatens lethal; it is your search starter after recovery. Against exile of the graveyard, that retained card is often worth more than another redundant bonus on an already lethal creature.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Aura found by Light-Paws trigger her again?

No. You put it onto the battlefield without casting it. The commander checks that you cast the Aura that entered. One qualifying cast normally gives one search.

Can Light-Paws find an Aura with a larger mana value if I paid extra?

No. The limit uses the entering Aura's mana value. Taxes and most alternative or additional costs do not increase that value.

Does protection from white remove my own Auras?

Normally yes, unless the specific protection effect supplies an exception. Flickering Ward protects itself. Benevolent Blessing preserves your already attached Auras and Equipment, but still prevents new white Auras from attaching.

Is Shardmage's Rescue permanent hexproof?

No. Its hexproof applies only during the turn the Aura entered. The plus-one bonus continues while it remains attached.

Can I tutor an Aura onto a different creature?

The searched Aura is attached to Light-Paws. A cast Aura can enchant something else and still start the search, but the found card must legally enchant the commander.

Is Retether the same as Replenish here?

No. Retether returns Auras that can enchant creatures, while Replenish returns enchantment cards more broadly. Neither casts those returned Auras, so neither produces a fresh Light-Paws search for each one.
