Krenko wants cheap Goblins, haste, protection, and one explosive payoff
A strong Krenko, Mob Boss Commander deck is not just every Goblin you own. Start with cheap Goblins, haste, protection, untaps, sacrifice outlets, and budget swaps that preserve those jobs.
Practical Krenko deck targets
What Krenko, Mob Boss is trying to do
Krenko, Mob Boss taps to make Goblins equal to the number of Goblins you control, including tokens. If you control three Goblins, Krenko makes three more; the next activation counts all six. The deck is therefore built to cast Krenko early, give him haste, protect one activation, then double or weaponize the tokens.
Treat Krenko as the engine, not just a threat. Casual combat lists use lords and pump like Shared Animosity. Focused lists add tutors, card flow, and token-damage payoffs. Combo-leaning lists add repeated untaps, efficient tutors, fast mana, and deterministic damage loops, which should be discussed before the game.
Krenko, Mob Boss
Commander and token engine
The whole deck is built around making Krenko tap safely and repeatedly. Haste, protection, and untap effects are worth more here than random high-mana Goblins.
The core upgrade package
A practical skeleton is 14 to 20 one- and two-mana Goblins, 5 to 8 haste effects, 4 to 7 protection pieces, 3 to 6 token payoffs, 3 to 5 sacrifice outlets, 6 to 9 card-flow cards, and 32 to 35 lands. Cut cards that do not create bodies, protect Krenko, draw cards, make mana, tutor, untap him, or win.
High-impact Krenko upgrade targets
Skirk Prospector
Sacrifice mana engine
Sacrifice Goblins for red mana. It ramps, pays for finishers, rebuilds after wipes, and is combo infrastructure with untap loops.
Goblin Chieftain
Haste lord
Gives Krenko's tokens haste and extra power, turning one activation into immediate combat pressure.
Goblin Warchief
Cost reducer and haste source
Makes Goblins cheaper and hasty. Best when your list keeps a high creature count instead of loading up on noncreature tricks.
Thornbite Staff
Untap combo piece
When a creature dies, the equipped creature untaps. With Krenko equipped and a sacrifice outlet, each sacrificed Goblin can untap Krenko for another activation.
Impact Tremors
Noncombat finisher
Each Goblin entering deals 1 to each opponent. One large Krenko activation can remove a table without attacking.
Purphoros, God of the Forge
Premium damage payoff
A harder-to-remove, double-damage version of the token payoff plan. It ends games quickly but raises the deck's ceiling.
Budget swaps that keep the deck explosive
Budget Krenko works because the commander supplies the scaling. Use true budget cards for the same role first, then add mid-budget consistency pieces, then premium ceiling cards only if your table wants that speed.
Premium finisher vs budget damage plan
Both options reward the same thing: making a large number of Goblins. The premium card is more resilient, but the budget card still kills tables when Krenko activates multiple times.
Purphoros, God of the Forge
Premium token payoff
Hard to remove and lethal with large token bursts. Excellent if your budget and table power level support it.
Impact Tremors
Budget token payoff
Lower damage and easier to remove, but cheap, low-curve, and lethal after repeated Krenko activations.
Goblin Bombardment
Sacrifice finisher
Turns Goblins into direct damage, punishes board wipes, and gives Thornbite Staff a sacrifice outlet.
Good role swaps include Lightning Greaves to Swiftfoot Boots or Darksteel Plate, Purphoros to Impact Tremors or Boggart Shenanigans, Wheel of Fortune to Goblin Ringleader or Dark-Dweller Oracle, Gamble to Goblin Matron, Goblin Recruiter to Moggcatcher or more draw, and Thousand-Year Elixir to Magewright's Stone. Use the Deck Price Calculator and Commander Budget Alternatives before buying a full package.
Cheap Goblins are better than they look
A one-mana Goblin that looks small in combat still increases Krenko's first activation. After the next activation, it may represent several extra bodies. That is why slow five-mana Goblins that do not immediately create bodies or win are common cuts.
Low-curve Goblins and token support
Mogg War Marshal
Multiple bodies from one card
Provides several Goblins for Krenko math and leaves material for sacrifice outlets.
Legion Loyalist
Combat breaker
Gives trample and first strike with battalion, helping a giant Goblin attack beat blockers.
Goblin Instigator
Two Goblins on curve
A plain but excellent two-drop because it puts two Goblins on board before Krenko.
Battle Cry Goblin
Token maker and pump outlet
Converts spare red mana from Skirk Prospector, Brightstone Ritual, or Battle Hymn into tokens and team pump.
Squee, Dubious Monarch
Attack-based token value
Makes attacking Goblins and recurs from the graveyard, fitting aggressive builds better than pure combo lists.
Recommended Krenko upgrades by role
| Role | Premium pick | Budget swap | Why it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haste | Urabrask the Hidden | Fervor / Goblin Chieftain | Krenko must tap before opponents untap with removal. |
| Protection | Lightning Greaves | Swiftfoot Boots / Goblin Chirurgeon | Greaves is efficient, but shroud can stop your own equip or target lines. |
| Token payoff | Purphoros, God of the Forge | Impact Tremors / Boggart Shenanigans | Turns token creation or Goblin deaths into table damage. |
| Sac outlet | Goblin Bombardment | Skirk Prospector | Converts tokens into damage or mana and enables Thornbite Staff. |
| Untap/copy | Rings of Brighthearth / Illusionist's Bracers | Magewright's Stone / Thousand-Year Elixir | Extra Krenko activations scale exponentially. |
| Card flow | Wheel of Fortune | Goblin Ringleader / Dark-Dweller Oracle | Reloads after emptying your hand or losing the board. |
| Tutor | Goblin Recruiter | Goblin Matron | Finds Krenko support such as Prospector, Chieftain, or Ringleader. |
Haste and protection decide most games
If Krenko enters and taps, you are playing Magic. If he dies before tapping, you spent four mana doing almost nothing. Greaves is powerful, but shroud means you may need to move it before equipping Thornbite Staff, Illusionist's Bracers, or other targeted tools. Boots is slower but cleaner with your own targeting. Budget protection can also include Goblin Chirurgeon, Bolt Bend, Deflecting Swat if your budget allows, and Darksteel Plate in removal-heavy metas.
Haste and protection options
Lightning Greaves
Protection and haste
Best rate, but shroud can interfere with later equipment or targeting. Sequence it after other equips when possible.
Swiftfoot Boots
Flexible protection
Hexproof lets you keep targeting Krenko with your own Staff, Bracers, or Stone effects.
Fervor
Global haste
Simple haste for Krenko and every future token maker, though it does not stop removal.
Goblin Chirurgeon
Creature-based protection
Sacrifices Goblins to regenerate Krenko or a key lord while also counting as a Goblin.
Darksteel Plate
Board-wipe protection
Slower than Boots, but strong when damage wipes and destroy effects are common.
Combo lines and power-level expectations
The clearest line is Krenko plus Thornbite Staff plus a sacrifice outlet. Equip Krenko, tap him to make tokens, sacrifice one Goblin to Skirk Prospector or Goblin Bombardment, Thornbite Staff untaps Krenko because a creature died, then tap Krenko again. If each activation makes more Goblins than you sacrifice, the loop grows until Bombardment, Impact Tremors, Purphoros, or Pashalik Mons kills the table.
Fairer lines still snowball. Krenko plus Magewright's Stone or Thousand-Year Elixir means tap Krenko, pay to untap him, then tap again for a much larger second batch. Illusionist's Bracers or Rings of Brighthearth copy Krenko's activated ability, creating two token batches from one tap. Staff of Domination becomes strong when Skirk Prospector, Brightstone Ritual, or Battle Hymn creates enough mana to untap Krenko and draw into payoffs. Aggravated Assault is mainly for builds that can make enough mana to chain combats with a huge board.
Combo and ceiling raisers
Thornbite Staff
Repeatable untap engine
Combo piece with any sacrifice outlet. It is powerful enough to change how the table evaluates your deck.
Magewright's Stone
Budget untap tool
Pays one mana to untap Krenko after he taps, usually doubling the most important turn.
Staff of Domination
Mana sink and combo support
Untaps Krenko, gains life, and draws cards when your token mana engine produces excess mana.
Aggravated Assault
Extra combat finisher
Converts a huge Goblin board and burst mana into repeated attacks. Skip it if your list cannot reliably pay five mana again.
If your group uses brackets, check the list with the Commander Bracket Calculator and Game Changers Checker. Fast mana, efficient tutors, repeated untaps, deterministic damage loops, and premium free protection move Krenko upward much more than ordinary Goblin combat cards.
Removal, interaction, and surviving board wipes
Krenko is fast, but not immune to hate. Run enough answers to remove blockers, stax pieces, and artifact engines. Sacrifice outlets are also interaction against board wipes: Goblin Bombardment turns dying Goblins into damage, Skirk Prospector turns them into mana, and Dark-Dweller Oracle turns them into card flow.
Interaction and recovery picks
Chaos Warp
Broad red answer
Answers enchantments, creatures, planeswalkers, and other permanents red may otherwise struggle to remove.
Abrade
Creature or artifact removal
Efficient answer to early blockers, hatebears, and problem artifacts.
Vandalblast
Artifact sweeper
Overload can clear mana rocks and blockers before a decisive Krenko turn.
Blasphemous Act
Emergency reset
A backup plan when another creature deck is faster. Sacrifice outlets reduce the downside.
Start around six to ten interactive cards depending on your meta. Use the Commander Interaction Checker after drafting; Krenko still needs answers to Ghostly Prison effects, artifact combo pieces, and creatures that stop combat.
Mana base and curve decisions
Most lists want 32 to 35 lands and a curve under 2.8. Prioritize Mountains and untapped red sources. Budget lands like Forgotten Cave, Myriad Landscape, Castle Embereth, and Den of the Bugbear are reasonable, but too many tapped or colorless utility lands make early Goblin starts worse.
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is worth the cost only if your board regularly holds many red permanents and your list has mana sinks. Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle is for slower, higher-budget games with many Mountains; skip it if your plan is to win before land six. Budget players should usually buy haste, protection, Goblin Matron, Goblin Ringleader, and finishers before premium lands.
Mana base cards worth considering
Castle Embereth
Team pump land
Adds damage without using a spell slot. Strong in combat builds and usually budget-friendly.
Den of the Bugbear
Creature land and token value
Makes Goblins in long games, but entering tapped can hurt fast starts.
Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
Late-game damage land
Powerful in grindy games with many Mountains, but unnecessary for tight budget or low-curve lists.
Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx
Devotion mana burst
Excellent with many red permanents, but buy it after the core Goblin engine is already consistent.
Run the list through the Commander Mana Curve Calculator. If too many cards cost four or more, cut slow non-Goblin haymakers, expensive Goblins that do not create bodies or win immediately, low-impact combat tricks, and excess colorless utility lands.
A practical upgrade order
For a first ten upgrades, start with Skirk Prospector, Mogg War Marshal, Goblin Instigator, Goblin Chieftain, Swiftfoot Boots, Impact Tremors, Goblin Bombardment, Goblin Matron, Goblin Ringleader, and Brightstone Ritual. Next add Goblin Recruiter, Muxus, Goblin Grandee, Shared Animosity, Pashalik Mons, Thousand-Year Elixir, Illusionist's Bracers, Rings of Brighthearth, Battle Hymn, and Boggart Shenanigans as your budget and power target allow.
- Cut slow cards that do not create Goblins, protect Krenko, draw cards, make mana, tutor, untap him, or finish.
- Add cheap Goblins first so Krenko's first activation matters.
- Add haste and protection before expensive win conditions.
- Choose combat, damage-payoff, or combo as the main plan, then avoid scattered off-plan cards.
- Price the final list with /deck-price-calculator and replace expensive role players through /commander-budget-alternatives.
Tune the Krenko list before buying cards
Import your list, price upgrades, then check whether the curve and interaction package match the power level you want.
FAQ
How many Goblins should a Krenko, Mob Boss Commander deck run?
Most focused lists want about 30 to 36 Goblins. If you go much lower, Krenko's first activation becomes unreliable.
Is Krenko, Mob Boss better as aggro or combo?
Both work. Aggro uses lords, Shared Animosity, and combat pressure. Combo uses untaps, sacrifice outlets, and token-damage payoffs. Many strong casual lists blend the two.
What is the best budget upgrade for Krenko?
Impact Tremors is a top budget finisher. Skirk Prospector, Goblin Matron, Swiftfoot Boots, and Goblin Bombardment are also excellent early buys.
How many lands should Krenko play?
A typical Krenko list plays 32 to 35 lands. Use more lands if your curve is higher, and avoid too many tapped or colorless utility lands.
Does Krenko need expensive fast mana?
No. Premium fast mana makes Krenko faster, but cheap Goblins, haste, protection, Brightstone Ritual, Battle Hymn, and Skirk Prospector can keep budget builds explosive.
