What is a good Commander mana curve?

A typical Commander deck averages around 3 mana value, with most nonland cards costing 1 to 4 and a lighter tail above five. Ramp, card draw, and your commander's own cost all shift the ideal. This is a rule of thumb, not an official rule, and the calculator above reads your deck's real curve.

Reading a real mana curve

A curve number means more when you read it next to lands and early plays.

Example, a 99 card list with 36 lands and a 3.1 average

Imagine a Golgari midrange deck that imports at 100 cards with 36 lands. The calculator reports a nonland average mana value of about 3.1, with most spells clustered at three and four mana and a healthy stack of one and two mana plays. That is a comfortable midrange shape. The deck has early action, a reasonable land count, and a top end that is not too crowded.

Now push the same deck higher

Swap a handful of cheap cards for five and six mana bombs and the average climbs toward 3.8, while the count of one and two mana plays drops. The calculator flags the heavier top end. Nothing here is wrong on its own, but it is a signal to double check ramp and early plays before the deck hits the table, since fewer cheap cards usually means slower starts.

How the number changes your next move

If the curve reads heavy, the usual fixes are adding a couple more cheap plays, trimming a top end bomb, or adding ramp so the expensive cards land on time. If the curve already looks lean, you may have room to add a finisher. The tool points at the pressure, then leaves the exact cut to your read of the deck.

How to read your curve

Average mana value is a starting point, not a verdict

A single average hides a lot. Two decks can share the same number while one is a smooth midrange curve and the other is a pile of cheap cantrips next to a wall of expensive bombs. Read the average together with the bucket shape and your early plays. The buckets show where the spells actually sit, which is usually more useful than the average alone.

Lands and ramp change what a high curve means

A higher curve is fine when the deck can pay for it. If you run extra lands and a strong ramp package, expensive cards arrive on time. If you are light on both, the same curve plays much slower. Let your commander set the target

Your commander is the one card you always have access to, so build the curve toward casting it on time and using the mana around it. A cheap commander wants enough cheap follow up to spend the freed mana. An expensive commander usually wants ramp and a leaner support curve. What is a good average mana value for a Commander deck?

Most Commander decks sit comfortably around 2.5 to 3.5 average mana value for nonland cards. Higher curves can work, but they usually want more ramp and more cheap plays so the deck does not feel slow. Use the number as a guide against your own commander and ramp, not as a hard rule.

Does the calculator count lands in the curve?

No. The curve buckets and average mana value come from nonland cards, so the curve reflects the spells you cast. Land count is shown as its own number so you can read tempo and mana base separately.

What counts as an early play?

Here, an early play is a nonland card with a mana value of one or two. These are the cards that keep your first couple of turns active. A low early play count next to a high average is the most common reason a deck stalls.

Why is one of my cards unresolved?

Unresolved cards usually come from set codes, collector numbers, promo printings, or spelling variations. Those cards are listed separately and left out of the curve math until the name resolves cleanly through Scryfall.

Is the high curve flag a hard rule?

No. It is a flexible heads-up that appears only when the data supports it, usually a high average paired with few early plays. Treat it as a prompt to check ramp and cheap plays, not as a fail grade.
