Best Temur Commander Staples

Choose Temur Commander staples for creatures, instants, copies, ramp, and interaction, with useful swaps for a connected green-blue-red EDH engine and finish.

In this guide

Quick answer

Quick answer

Temur staples should connect green development, blue access, and red impact with a chosen cast, copy, or combat engine. Temur Charm, Surrak Dragonclaw, and cheap single-color answers are useful comparisons. Animar creatures, Kalamax instants, Maelstrom Wanderer cascade, and Riku copies reward different events. Build the actual sequence before adding more value engines.

Choose the engine that makes Temur distinct

Temur is green, blue, and red. It can develop mana, cast large spells, reuse creatures, copy effects, and apply combat pressure. The broad resource access makes it easy to assemble a good-stuff list without a clear destination. Choose what the commander rewards and how the deck ends a normal game, then use staples to bridge those stages.

Animar, Soul of Elements rewards creature casts and reduces generic creature costs. Kalamax, the Stormsire rewards a first instant each turn under a tapped condition. Maelstrom Wanderer rewards reaching an expensive cast and resolving two cascade triggers. Riku of Two Reflections offers paid copies through separate spell and creature-entry abilities. These commanders share useful sources and answers without needing the same spell composition.

The useful question is what the next staple lets the deck do. Does it cast the commander earlier, supply an event the engine sees, preserve an important turn, or provide a finish? A card that merely adds another future reward can compete with the resources needed to begin. Keep ordinary lands, useful low-cost action, draw, and interaction visible before increasing the ideal ceiling.

Temur-specific comparisons

Temur Charm

Flexible instant

Offers a pumped fight, a counter unless three mana is paid, or a restriction on small blockers. Each mode has a condition; it is not unconditional removal or a hard counter.

Surrak Dragonclaw Magic: The Gathering card image
Surrak Dragonclaw
Card mention

Surrak Dragonclaw

Creature support

Has flash, cannot be countered, makes your creature spells uncounterable, and gives other creatures trample. It does not protect them from removal after resolution.

Animar, Soul of Elements

Creature-cast development

Creature casts add plus-one counters, which reduce generic creature costs. Required colored mana remains, and entries without casts do not provide the counter trigger.

Kalamax, the Stormsire Magic: The Gathering card image

Card mention

Kalamax, the Stormsire

Conditional instant copying

Copies your first instant each turn when its tapped condition is met. Tapping it only after the cast did not meet the condition does not retroactively create the trigger.

Maelstrom Wanderer

Cascade and combat

Its cast produces two cascade triggers and its battlefield presence gives your creatures haste. Putting it directly onto the battlefield does not create those cast triggers.

Riku of Two Reflections

Paid duplication

Offers a separate payment to copy a cast instant or sorcery, and another payment for another nontoken creature entering. Extra resources must remain after the original action.

Use development that matches the repeated event

Nature's Lore and Three Visits can find a Forest card, including a suitable typed dual, with the land's own entry conditions still applying. Farseek lists Plains, Island, Swamp, and Mountain and puts the land tapped. Temur can use Island or Mountain access, including a dual that also has Forest. A plain basic Forest is not a Farseek target. Count the actual land package rather than assuming every search fixes every color.

Mana creatures can support Animar through casting and may become cheap to deploy later. Creature-entry ramp can support Riku if another payment is available. Land-based ramp can provide resilience after creature removal and help reach Maelstrom Wanderer. A Kalamax list may prefer a mixture that leaves space for instants and a way to meet the tapped condition. The same ramp count can produce very different ordinary turns.

Ketria Triome fixes all three colors and has useful basic land types, but enters tapped. Command Tower fixes through a different source profile. Utility lands and colorless rocks can help later while missing an early blue or green requirement. Use Mana Base Calculator to inspect the first useful sequence, including the mana left for protection or a Riku payment after the commander arrives.

Animar rewards casts, not merely a creature-heavy board

A creature cast adds a plus-one counter through Animar's trigger. A creature put directly onto the battlefield did not produce that cast event. The cost reduction uses the counters already on Animar while determining the payment; the trigger from the spell being cast does not travel backward to discount that same casting. Build early plays that can establish counters before relying on a large later reduction.

The reduction affects generic cost. A creature costing only colored mana cannot become free because Animar has several counters. A large artifact creature with generic costs can interact differently, but should still serve the deck rather than exist only to inflate a hypothetical chain. A list with many discounts and few useful creatures can stall just as easily as one with threats it cannot cast.

Animar's protection from white and black covers specific interactions, not universal safety. It does not stop every nontargeting wipe, exile effect, or damage source outside those qualities. Keep some appropriate protection and a recovery plan. A cheap creature engine can be powerful without treating the commander as impossible to answer or assuming every card in hand will become free.

Kalamax needs the condition before the first instant

Kalamax's copy trigger checks the first instant spell you cast each turn and whether Kalamax is tapped. If you cast that first instant while it is untapped, tapping it afterward does not retroactively create the trigger. A later instant that turn is no longer your first. Plan the tapped state and the intended spell before spending the first instant slot.

Attacking can tap Kalamax when it can legally attack, while another effect may offer a different way to tap it. The method has its own costs and restrictions. A newly controlled creature normally cannot attack without haste, and its own tap-symbol ability would have the usual restriction. An ability on another permanent that uses a creature as part of a cost follows its own wording, so identify the exact source rather than guessing from the presence of a tap action.

The intervening condition also matters as the triggered ability resolves. Untapping Kalamax at the wrong time can change whether the copy happens. Its other ability rewards copying an instant with a counter, which is a separate event. A spell-copy package needs actual instants, legal targets, mana, and useful results. It is not enough to include several expensive copy cards and assume every turn will provide the ideal first spell.

Cascade changes which generic staples fit

Maelstrom Wanderer has two cascade triggers when cast. Each looks for a nonland card meeting cascade's mana-value condition and offers a cast without its mana cost under the keyword rules. Putting Wanderer directly onto the battlefield does not create those cast triggers. A reanimation or entry-copy effect may still supply haste or a body, but it is a different payoff.

A cheap counterspell can be excellent in hand and awkward as a cascade result without a useful legal target. A ramp spell can improve development and be a less exciting late hit. Those are real tradeoffs, not proof that the deck should cut every early play. You still need to reach the expensive commander and interact before it arrives. Choose a balance where low-cost cards help normal turns and larger hits provide useful impact.

Cascade offers choices rather than forcing every discovered spell to be cast. Declining a poor cast can be correct. A spell with X cast without paying its mana cost normally has X equal to zero unless another instruction provides otherwise. Do not build a supposed cascade payoff around paying a huge X that the permission does not support. Read the resulting cast, not only the card's maximum ceiling.

Riku needs mana after the original action

Riku's instant-or-sorcery copy opportunity has an additional blue-red payment. Its creature-entry opportunity has a green-blue payment and applies to another nontoken creature entering. A token copy created by that ability is a token and does not create an endless chain through the nontoken condition. The separate payment belongs in the turn plan each time.

A four-mana creature followed by a two-mana copy payment needs more resources than the creature's printed cost. A creature that finds a land or draws may help repay some value, but the payment must be available before the imagined next stage. A deck that taps out for every useful spell can leave Riku present without using its text. Choose cheap useful targets and sufficient development rather than only dramatic expensive copies.

Copying a legendary creature can invoke the legend rule when you control matching legendary permanents. A copy generally does not receive the original's counters, Equipment, or most temporary bonuses. Entry abilities can still provide value, but the resulting board may not retain both bodies. Check the exact copied characteristics and any exception before counting a copy as a permanent second commander-sized threat.

Draw engines must see the right event

Beast Whisperer rewards creature casts, while Guardian Project rewards qualifying nontoken creature entries with a same-name condition. A Riku token copy is not a nontoken creature for that Project trigger. Garruk's Uprising instead checks power and can also grant trample. A deck with many bodies may still fail a particular engine's event or threshold.

Archmage Emeritus and Storm-Kiln Artist can see casting or copying instants and sorceries through magecraft. Young Pyromancer rewards actual instant-and-sorcery casts. A Kalamax copy can therefore support those cards differently. Choose the event the commander produces and retain useful spells beneath the payoff. More reward permanents do little when the hand lacks the first useful instant.

Fact or Fiction, Harmonize, and appropriate low-cost selection can provide access without the full creature engine. A commander that already generates substantial value may need fewer extra engines and more answers or a finish. Identify whether the deck runs out of quantity, misses a particular card, or simply cannot spend what it draws. Those failures need different upgrades.

Keep broad answers and a route through combat

Beast Within can destroy any permanent with a token drawback. Chaos Warp offers broad targeting with a possible revealed replacement. Blue counters can stop spells before resolution, while Reality Shift or Resculpt can exile a resolved creature with a replacement. Red artifact answers cover another set of threats. Build a mix that still acts when a problem has entered while you were tapped out.

Temur Charm's fight mode increases your creature temporarily, then makes it fight an opposing creature. Damage can be dealt back to your creature, unlike a one-sided damage instruction. Its counter mode can fail when the opponent can pay three. Its blocking restriction stops creatures with power three or less from blocking for the turn but leaves larger blockers available. Read the current board before selecting the mode.

Surrak Dragonclaw makes creature spells uncounterable and gives other creatures trample, but does not make those creatures immune to targeted removal or exile. It is a five-mana support creature, not a substitute for early development. Use Interaction Checker to inspect coverage and keep combat assistance separate from direct answers in your notes.

Protect and recover the engine you chose

Heroic Intervention can preserve permanents through targeted effects and destruction, but not every nontargeting exile or toughness reduction. Tamiyo's Safekeeping can protect one key permanent at a lower mana cost. Counterspells protect a different window. A deck that needs Kalamax tapped, Animar carrying counters, or Riku available for payments can value each route differently.

Eternal Witness can recover a card to hand, and Archaeomancer can recover an instant or sorcery on entering. A blink effect can reuse an entry while removing counters from a creature that leaves and returns as a new object. That may help one part of the engine and hurt another. Do not combine every value loop without deciding which resource the list wants to preserve.

A reset can also remove the mana creatures the deck needs to restart. Land ramp and independent draw can provide a fallback. Blasphemous Act uses damage and does not clear indestructible by that route. A bounce reset can buy time but allow opponents to replay resources. Choose protection, wipe, and recovery as a connected package rather than several individually strong cards that undermine the same board.

Choose a finish that follows the ordinary turns

A creature army can use a team payoff or trample, while an instant-copy deck can use a spell sequence or a growing commander. A cascade deck can pressure through high-impact casts and haste. A Riku list can focus on useful repeated creatures or spells rather than trying to maximize both packages at once. The best finish is one the ordinary resource plan already prepares.

A repeatable sequence needs a verified balance. Untapping a mana source and paying to copy a spell is not automatically infinite when each cycle consumes more mana or cards than it produces. A once-per-turn or first-spell condition can stop repetition. Count casts, copies, mana, and targets separately before describing a loop. Useful synergy does not need an exaggerated infinite claim to deserve a slot.

Explain intentional long chains, deterministic finishes, or repeated extra turns before games. A resource-heavy Temur deck can play at several different paces. Choose tutoring, burst mana, and protection consistent with the games you want, then retain enough room for the actual engine. A stack of powerful generic cards does not itself provide a clear or enjoyable sequence.

Make focused replacements

Current failureComparison to testTradeoff
Animar has expensive creatures but few early casts A redundant top-end body to a useful cheap creature Less raw ceiling, a working discount sequence
Kalamax misses its first-instant condition A redundant payoff to a reliable legal setup route Less copy reward, more actual trigger opportunities
Riku has no mana after casting targets A costly target to cheaper value or development Smaller isolated impact, an affordable copy
Wanderer cascades into awkward narrow spells Review the balance of early support and useful hits Different interaction density, better payoff consistency

Save the old version and compare the missing link. Use Mana Curve Analyzer to inspect the printed curve, then record discounts and copy payments manually. Current printing prices vary. A useful cheap creature, colored source, or independent draw spell can improve ordinary hands more than another premium engine that rewards an event the deck rarely creates.

FAQ

Does Animar make colored creature costs free?

Its reduction applies to generic cost based on its counters. Required colored pips remain. The counter from casting a creature also does not retroactively discount that same casting. Establish the counters and count the actual payment before relying on the reduction.

Can I tap Kalamax after casting my first instant?

If it was untapped when the first-instant trigger condition needed to be met, tapping it later does not retroactively create the trigger. Plan its tapped state first. The condition also matters on resolution, so changing the state in response can affect the result.

Does Maelstrom Wanderer cascade when reanimated?

Cascade triggers from casting the spell. Putting it directly onto the battlefield does not create those cast triggers. Its battlefield abilities can still matter, but the payoff is different. Choose the recovery card for the value it actually produces.

Does Riku copy its own token copies indefinitely?

Its creature ability requires another nontoken creature entering and an additional payment. The token it creates does not meet that nontoken condition for another repetition. Legendary copies and resource costs also need checking. The ability is not an automatic unlimited clone loop.

Is Temur Charm a hard counter?

Its counter mode allows the spell's controller to pay three. That can be useful when mana is tight and unreliable when the opponent has spare resources. Its other modes also have conditions. Choose it for flexibility rather than pretending every mode is unconditional.

What is the main Temur deckbuilding trap?

Combining several strong engines that reward different events without enough useful casts, mana, or a finish. Creature casts, entries, instants, and copies are not interchangeable. Choose the commander's sequence and fix the stage where ordinary turns fail before adding another multiplier.

Build Temur around a sequence you can pay for

Build your deck around creature casts, first instants, cascade, or paid copies. Create a free account to save the version and compare it across the connected tools. Mark each event and additional payment separately. A useful Temur package turns its broad resource access into a coherent turn rather than assuming every strong green-blue-red card rewards the same action.
