Review card roles

Land types come from Scryfall's front face. Ramp, draw, and interaction reuse Deckcipher's audit heuristics. Tutors use a shared curated list. Fast mana uses the shared list plus artifacts costing 2 or less with an unconditional tap ability that produces more mana than their mana value, such as Sol Ring. These lists are not exhaustive. Early plays are nonlands with mana value 2 or less and a printed mana cost. These roles describe cards in hand, not whether you can cast them.

Change any role for this simulation. Shared role corrections are saved on this device when storage is available. Mark commanders to exclude them from the library. MDFCs count by their front face unless you change Land.

    Keep Conditions

All means AND; any means OR. A card may satisfy several roles. Card groups can represent specific cards, commander enablers, or a combination you want to retain.

    Advanced settings

Every attempt draws seven. All possible retained subsets are checked. Prefer one that meets the full rule, then the most individual conditions. Break ties with your selected method; lands cost zero for this tie-break, unknown costs sort last. This finds rule satisfaction, not optimal gameplay. Stop at your minimum size; an unsuccessful final attempt counts as a failure to find a keep.

    Quick estimate without a decklist

    Start from a common question

Chance of seeing the target in a seven-card draw

    --

    --Before any mulligan
    --Miss every look
--Standard keep size at maximum depth
    What do these numbers mean?
    Cards in deck (deck size)
Commander usually starts at 99 cards in the library.
Matching cards in deck (desired cards in deck)
Enter how many lands, combo pieces, or other hits count for this test.
Hits you want in the opener (hits wanted in opening seven)
Use 1 when you just need to see one key card. Use 2 or more for land checks.
Mulligans you will take (London mulligans taken)
This controls how many seven card looks you are willing to take before keeping.
    How this is calculated

This legacy quick estimate uses the hypergeometric distribution for each fresh seven and combines independent looks after reshuffling. It measures seeing your target before bottoming. It does not evaluate the retained hand or include a free mulligan. Use the simulator above for those decisions.

Next: check raw draw odds or size your mana base.

Rule of thumb ยท not an official rule

When should you mulligan in Commander?

A common guideline is to keep hands with two to four lands and at least one early play, and to mulligan one-landers, six-plus-land hands, and all-expensive draws. Your commander and curve move that line. This is a rule of thumb, not an official rule, and the calculator above estimates how often you keep.

How the London mulligan and Commander's free mulligan work

Shuffle your hand back into the library and draw seven whenever you mulligan. After deciding to keep, put cards on the bottom equal to your counted mulligans. In multiplayer Commander the first mulligan is free, so the retained sizes are seven, seven, six, five, and so on. In a two-player game using ordinary London rules they are seven, six, five, and so on.

The simulator checks the final retained cards. A six-card London hand is selected from a seven-card draw, which gives you a choice about what to bottom. It is not the same distribution as drawing six random cards. Every rejected seven is reshuffled before the next attempt. The simulation stops at your first qualifying hand or your minimum size.

See Wizards' Comprehensive Rules, section 103.5, and our mulligan rules guide. Special opening-hand effects such as Serum Powder, companion actions, and pregame abilities are outside this model.

    What the probabilities mean

The main result is the fraction of complete simulated sequences that found a retained hand meeting your rules. Starting-seven probability describes only the initial seven-card draw. At each mulligan depth, the chart shows cumulative success across all sequences, plus the post-bottom pass rate among attempts that reached that depth. Those denominators are different.

If no hand qualifies by your minimum retained size, the sequence is unsuccessful. The simulator does not silently turn that last rejected hand into a successful keep. Average mulligans includes those unsuccessful sequences. The 95% interval describes sampling uncertainty, not uncertainty in classifications or your strategy.

The optional seed reproduces a run with the same deck, roles, conditions, bottoming choice, and simulation count. Inspecting more examples does not change the result. For exact single-category draw probabilities, use the hypergeometric calculator.

How to customize a Commander or cEDH mulligan strategy

Balanced requires two to four lands and at least one nonland with mana value two or less and a printed mana cost. Aggressive requires two to three lands, or exactly one land plus a fast-mana card, together with an early play. These are editable composition rules, not official keep standards or proof that a spell can be cast.

For a cEDH mulligan simulator tailored to your list, choose Custom and combine land, ramp, draw, tutor, and interaction conditions. An OR group can accept either draw or a tutor. An AND group can demand a mana package alongside either option. Selected-card groups can represent commander enablers or specific pieces. To require every card in a combination, add an individual condition for each card; requiring two cards from a group can otherwise include two physical copies of the same name.

Review automatic roles before interpreting a result. Deckcipher reuses its audit heuristics and curated lists; manual corrections are available. Counts indicate cards present, not mana produced or spells available this turn. Color access by turn is deferred because tapped lands, fetch choices, costs, and sequencing need a separate gameplay model. Use the Mana Base Calculator and cEDH Goldfish Simulator for that context.

    Mulligan calculator FAQ

Does this assume I always take every mulligan listed?

Stop at the first retained hand that meets the chosen rules. If no hand qualifies by the configured minimum size, the sequence counts as an unsuccessful search.

Why does the final keep size go down even though every look is seven cards?

Each attempt draws seven. After accepting a hand, bottom one card per counted mulligan. The first multiplayer Commander mulligan is free, giving retained sizes of seven, seven, six, five, and so on.

Can I use this outside Commander?

Yes. Load your actual decklist and select Standard London rules in Advanced settings to disable the free multiplayer mulligan. Deck legality is not enforced.
