Random Commander Generator

This MTG and EDH tool selects currently Commander-legal paper cards, including legendary creatures, eligible Vehicles and Spacecraft, and cards with explicit commander permission. Reprints share one Oracle identity, so extra printings do not give a card better odds. Enchantment-only Backgrounds appear only in compatible pairs.

Surprise me chooses singles about 80% of the time and pairs about 20%, when both categories match. It then chooses a result in that category. For pairs, each available pairing family has equal odds, followed by an equal choice within that family. This gives small families meaningful exposure. Cards and all possible combinations do not have identical odds. Recent results are avoided while alternatives remain; tiny pools can repeat.

Filters use the complete result's combined color identity. Exactly these colors matches every selected color and no others. Within these colors allows fewer colors, including colorless. Any colors removes the restriction. Colorless is a separate choice. A required pregame color is chosen as part of the result, displayed below the cards, and preserved in the shared link and deck draft.

Supported systems are ordinary Partner, fixed Partner with, Choose a Background, matching-group Partner (Character select, Father & son, Friends forever and Survivors), and Doctor's companion. Groups must match. Doctor's companion requires a legendary creature with exactly the Time Lord Doctor creature types. Ordinary Companion does not grant a second commander.

Legal examples: Tymna the Weaver + Thrasios, Triton Hero share ordinary Partner. Burakos, Party Leader + Guild Artisan use Choose a Background. Wernog, Rider's Chaplain + Bjorna, Nightfall Alchemist share Friends forever. These examples are checked against the snapshot during refresh.

Choose Create a deck to open the existing Deckcipher editor with your selected printing or both commanders in the commander slots. Your deck starts as a draft, with 99 main-deck slots for one commander or 98 for two. Nothing is saved by generating a result. Anonymous drafts work on this browser; sign in from the editor to save online.

Share result copies a link to this exact selection. It includes stable card identities and pregame color choices. A restored selection is checked against the current snapshot before you can build. The six most recent discoveries are kept locally and can be reopened without an account.

Card information and images come from Scryfall. The local snapshot contains 3,497 distinct cards. It was refreshed October 13, 2026 at 4:49 PM UTC. This is a snapshot, not a live legality check on every reroll.

Pairing rules follow the official Magic rules, reviewed October 13, 2026. Refreshes validate identifiers, legality, known Partner groups and required examples before replacing data. A failed refresh retains the last working snapshot. New or unknown Partner groups require review.
